KODE 9 & THE SPACEAPE (Hyperdub, UNITED KINGDOM)

Kode 9 & the Spaceape is a unique producer/vocalist collaboration from South London. Kode 9's Hyperdub sound is difficult to define - sometimes with beats, sometimes without, sometimes with a vocalist, sometimes without one. The only continuity is the heavy sub-bass. In 2006, with vocalist Spaceape, Kode 9 released their debut album "Memories of the Future". He runs the record label Hyperdub, releasing artists such as The Bug, Burial, Zomby, Ikonika and many more. He has hosted the weekly Fwd>> show on Rinse FM for 4 years, and is one of the rotating DJs at DMZ, the seminal dubstep night in London. His DJ sets have also helped spread the South London sound internationally, to East Asia, Europe, South America, North America and Australia.

His live and DJ sets currently travel through a selection of dancehall-influenced, bass-heavy skank - grime and dubstep. In Belgrade he will present the live collaboration with Spaceape, a vocalist whose dubtronic styles range from deep, gravely spoken word to mesmeric chanting and high octane toasting. Working mostly with Kode9, but also in collaborations with The Bug and Roger Robinson, Spaceape tells abstract, open-ended stories from another dimension. Their unique project Bass Fiction Live, which brings the studio to the stage - they mix their old and new material in a new, intense, bass-submerged mutation. In Belgrade, Kode 9 will present different aspects of his output: both a live and a DJ set at the party event entitled TEN, as well as a lecture/talk based on his book Sonic Warfare, out soon on MIT Press.
