PATHERNS: VICTOR VASARELY REVISITED

The main project of artistic residency of Lillevan Pobjoy at the Dis-patch festival will be a special commission and a collaboration with the local hero of twisted video Incredible Bob (aka Bob Milosevic).

"PATHERNS: Victor Vasarely revisited" is an exhibition developed on the invitation of the Hungarian Embassy in Belgrade, and will offer a new reading of approaches and aesthetics of Vasarely's enormous artistic output. Lillevan and Bob will be assembling an ambience on the ground floor of Progres Gallery, utilizing different mediums - video projections, light design, light sculptures, lenticulars and objects - both in the gallery and on the pavement of Knez Mihailova Street.

The exhibition will also show a representative selection of original Vasarely graphics and objects from a private collection of Mr. Tibor Csepei from Budapest. This part of the exhibition will be presented in the basement of the Progres Gallery, but also at other locations in the week following the 2-day presentation of PATHERNS. We not only have a chance to experience Vasarely's art at first-hand, but also to view it and feel it through the eyes of two contemporary masters of visual language, collaborating specially for this occasion.

The aesthetics of optical art and investigations into the kinetics of the moving image have inevitably made Vasarely one of the prime influences on the contemporary fields of abstract video, certain streams of experimental film and, certanly on the fields of object and graphic design. This has also been the starting point for the selection of authors for the project, extending Vasarely's ideas into new mediums and forms, also in the spirit of his ideas that art should reach each man and be open to various forms of presentation - from prints and sculptures to objects, murals or buildings. The selection of Lillevan Pobjoy and Incredible Bob is by no means a chance. Their complementary aesthetics are both at times very focused on the direction of optical illusions and abstract color movement or patterns of form, as well the depth of the image and a focus on the synaesthetic experience of the observer.

Patherns

A perfect match for a contemporary reading of Vasarely's broad approach, transforming the "path" of Vasarely's art into new visual "patterns", through diverse, but also complementary mediums, overtaking the peculiar space of the Progres Gallery and setting a stage for the play of light, color and movement. Together with a selection of Vasarely's original graphics, this project will offer a comprehensive view into the potential and transformation of the legacy of modern art, celebrating one of its most influential pioneers.

The project is curated by Relja Bobic.

It will be presented at the Progres Gallery in Belgrade (Knez Mihailova Street) on October 31st and November 1st, from 7 PM to 12 PM. Official opening on Oct 31st at 7 PM. The exhibition will be opened by his excellency Imre Varga, Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary.
